My Journey from Loss to Living

Lisa

I was a content mother, wife, and healthcare professional until my world shattered when my 17-year-old daughter, Katie, was killed in a car accident. In that moment, my life changed forever. The grief was overwhelming, and I often wondered if my little family could ever move forward. But with time, we held on and have found a way to carry on.

I feared that working through my grief might break my ties with Katie, or that others would think I had "moved on". I worried this might make the pain even worse.

Thankfully, these fears were unfounded. By leaning into my grief and healing, I now feel more connected to Katie than ever. I have found peace and have learned to live a meaningful life while honouring her memory.

In 2019, I published Journey to HEALING and went on to complete my certification as a grief educator, under David Kessler.

Nothing will ever replace my daughter, but my heart finds comfort in helping other bereaved mothers who are walking a similar path. Over time, I’ve discovered effective strategies to manage grief that have improved my physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. These insights are shared in my blogs and podcast and have brought me great healing.

As a grief mentor, I focus on supporting moms who have lost teens or young adults. The needs of support for this specific loss are unique—grieving not only who they were, but also the future they were meant to experience.

Community and connection in grief are vital. Let's walk together on this journey through grief.

Katie

Katie was my first born. She made me a mom. She may have been the most stubborn and determined person I have ever met! If she made up her mind to do something, consider it done.

She had the most outrageous laugh and she could RANT! Katie was the person that would make everyone laugh.

Katie was in grade 12 when she died and had been accepted into nursing at the University of Regina. She was destined to do good things in her life. She was kind, fun-loving, hardworking, and a little bit goofy too :)

I carry her in my heart every single day. She is the reason I wrote Journey to Healing. Katie loved helping others and lifting them up. I am positive that she would want me to do the same.

Fun Fact: The 'K' in Lisa K. Boehm is for Katie. K is not my middle initial, but I strongly felt that Katie needed to be on the cover of my book and a part of my journey.

You can shed tears that she is gone,
or you can smile because she lived.
