Here’s how to truly show up for us when the world moves on. 🌍💔

✅ DO:

✨ Check in regularly (a simple “I’m thinking of you” means so much).

✨ Offer specific help (e.g., “I’m bringing dinner Wednesday—does that work?”).

✨ Say their loved one’s name—it keeps their memory alive.

✨ Be a safe space for their emotions—no need to “fix” anything.

✨ Remember milestones (birthdays, anniversaries, and tough days. HINT: put these important days in your calendar)

🚫 DON’T:

❌ Assume they’re “better” just because time has passed.

❌ Say, “Let me know if you need anything” (be proactive instead!).

❌ Try to “cheer them up” —just sit with them in their grief.

Here are three things grieving moms often do that can unintentionally make their pain even harder to bear:

1️⃣ Suppressing Your Grief

Trying to “stay strong” for others or avoiding emotions can build up pain over time. Grief needs to be felt and expressed, whether through talking, writing, or simply allowing space for emotions to surface.

2️⃣ Comparing Your Grief to Others

Every grief journey is different. Comparing your healing process to someone else’s—whether they seem to be “moving on” faster or struggling more—can add unnecessary guilt or pressure. There’s no right or wrong way to grieve.

3️⃣ Feeling Guilty for Moments of Joy

Laughter, happiness, and finding meaning again don’t mean you love or miss your child any less. Allowing yourself moments of peace or joy is not a betrayal—it’s a part of carrying their love forward.

Instead, try to just BE with your grief. Learn to carry it instead of fighting it ❤️‍🩹

Unpopular… But It Needs to Be Said….. ⤵️

Grief is brutal. It changes everything. And while we can’t control loss, we do have a choice in what we do with it.

You can choose to stay in the pain… or you can choose to do the hard work of learning to manage it.

Trust me, it’s not easy… but neither is a lifetime of pain.

While I don’t profess to have a “proven game plan”, I do have 9 years of experience that has taught me a lot.

These are the things that I have done to work on my grief:

👉🏼 therapy & EMDR
👉🏼 joined support groups/connected with other Angel Moms
👉🏼 exercised daily, fuelled my body & prioritized sleep
👉🏼 made the decision to focus on living as a way of honouring Katie
👉🏼 read loads of self help books

And I’m still open to learning and exploring new things

It doesn’t mean I’m ignoring my grief. It doesn’t mean “getting over it” (because that’s not a thing). But it does mean deciding:

♥️ To find moments of joy without guilt
🩷 To seek support instead of suffering in silence
🧡 To allow healing and heartbreak to coexist

This isn’t about toxic positivity—it’s about survival. Because staying stuck in the pain doesn’t bring them back, but learning to live again honors their love.

Here are 7 coping strategies that may surprise you:

1️⃣ Breathe with intention – Deep, mindful breathing helps calm your nervous system when grief feels overwhelming. Try inhaling for 4 seconds, holding for 4, and exhaling for 6.

2️⃣ Let yourself feel – Pushing emotions down only makes them heavier. Give yourself permission to feel whatever comes up—without judgment.

3️⃣ Move your body – A simple walk, stretching, or even just stepping outside can shift your energy and ease emotional tension.

4️⃣ Create small rituals – Light a candle, write your child’s name in a journal, or listen to a song that connects you to them. Rituals provide comfort.

5️⃣ Find a safe space to talk – Whether it’s a trusted friend, support group, or podcast like this one, sharing your grief can lighten the load.

6️⃣ Give yourself grace – You’re not “doing grief wrong.” There’s no timeline, no perfect way—only what feels right for you.

FACT: The 5 stages of grief need to be debunked! ❌

Grief isn’t a step-by-step process with a finish line—it’s messy, unpredictable, and deeply personal.

Here’s why the 5 stages of grief theory has been disputed over the years:⤵️

🔸 It was never meant for bereavement – Elisabeth Kübler-Ross created the model to describe how terminally ill patients cope with their own impending death, not how people grieve a loss.

🔸 Grief isn’t linear – People don’t move through denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance in order. Emotions come and go unpredictably.

🔸 It oversimplifies grief – Grief is complex and varies based on personality, circumstances, culture, and relationships.

🔸 It suggests an “end point” – But grief doesn’t just disappear. We learn to carry it alongside love, joy, and healing.

🔸 Many experts favor new models – More modern grief theories, like the dual process model, emphasize how people oscillate between grief and restoration rather than moving through fixed stages.

My grief strategies focus on living again and learning to carry our child with us, not this antiquated theory. 🙄

FACT: The 5 stages of grief need to be debunked! ❌

Grief isn’t a step-by-step process with a finish line—it’s messy, unpredictable, and deeply personal.

Here’s why the 5 stages of grief theory has been disputed over the years:⤵️

🔸 It was never meant for bereavement – Elisabeth Kübler-Ross created the model to describe how terminally ill patients cope with their own impending death, not how people grieve a loss.

🔸 Grief isn’t linear – People don’t move through denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance in order. Emotions come and go unpredictably.

🔸 It oversimplifies grief – Grief is complex and varies based on personality, circumstances, culture, and relationships.

🔸 It suggests an “end point” – But grief doesn’t just disappear. We learn to carry it alongside love, joy, and healing.

🔸 Many experts favor new models – More modern grief theories, like the dual process model, emphasize how people oscillate between grief and restoration rather than moving through fixed stages.

My grief strategies focus on living again and learning to carry our child with us, not this antiquated theory. 🙄

They tell you grief is about missing your child, but no one warns you about:

😞 The exhaustion that hits like a brick wall

😞 The brain fog that makes simple tasks feel impossible

😞 The way friendships shift (or disappear)

😞 The sudden waves of guilt, even when you’re doing your best to survive

I wasn’t prepared for any of it, but here’s what helped me 👇🏼👇🏼

✅ Giving myself permission to rest—without guilt

✅ Journaling when my thoughts felt too heavy to hold

✅ Setting boundaries with people who didn’t understand my grief

✅ Finding small routines that brought a sense of stability

✅ Connecting with other grieving moms who truly got it

Here’s how I do it ⤵️

Breathwork is a practice of intentionally controlling the breath to calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and prevent emotional healing. When grieving, our bodies often stay in a state of fight-or-flight, leading to anxiety, tension, and shallow breathing. Breathwork helps by:

👉🏼 Regulating the nervous system – Deep breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and reducing stress.

👉🏼 Processing emotions – Conscious breathing can help release stored grief and ease emotional overwhelm.

👉🏼 Improving sleep and energy – Oxygenating the body properly can combat fatigue and improve overall well-being.

Even just a few minutes of deep breathing each day can provide a sense of peace and stability in the midst of grief.

Ok here’s what I imagine as I take long, slow breaths 👇🏼👇🏼

🧘🏻‍♀️on the in-breath, I imagine that all the air coming into my lungs is filled with bright white sparkles (imagine a snow globe) and each of those sparkles is filled with love and support from God/the Universe

🧘🏻‍♀️ on the out-breath, I imagine all that no longer serves me (pain, anger, blame, shame, guilt etc) is leaving my body and looks like black smoke.

Breathe in love, breathe out all that no longer serves you.

4 slow counts in, 6 slow counts out

Sit like this until you feel more relaxed ♥️

Here are 3 things you can do today to start releasing guilt: ⤵️

✔️ Acknowledge that guilt is a natural part of grief, but these feelings do not equal the truth

✔️ Challenge your thoughts and stick to the facts: Did you do anything intentional to put your child in harms way? Of course not.

✔️ Give yourself grace, Mama. You did the best you could at the time with the information you had. Hindsight makes everything look so clear, but we could not see into the future or control it.
